The Pennine Bridleway

In 1986 Mary Towneley rode from Derbyshire to Northumberland to highlight the state of the country’s bridleways and to launch the idea for The Pennine Bridleway. Approval for the route from Derbyshire to Cumbria came in 1995 and for Cumbria to Northumberland in 2002.

Landscape

Experience the history of the ancient packhorse trade routes and the gritstone mills and chimneys of the south Pennine valleys sandwiched between the stunning landscapes of the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Parks. The Pennines are a key water catchment area and hidden reservoirs nestle between the hills and moorlands which are also home to many upland birds and plants.
